My skins have arrived!

Im very excited to have my skins. Even though I dont plan on working on them for awhile, its nice to know they are here for when I'm ready.

I told myself I wasn't going to do it...But I just had to put the dome on top of the skins.

I also got a set of coin slots from Izzymel over the weekend.

A little progress...

On Saturday I had the opportunity to meet a few other builders. I was invited to Pixelfiends house for a build day.  Izzymel and R2-X2 were there as well. It was nice to meet them all and I was able to see a variety of parts in different materials. More importantly I was able to ask some questions, get some advice and see some of the things they were working on. All very useful to me. I did get some work done on my dome too. I marked all the panels, removed the bottom ring and the pie panels and was able to get a few of them deburred, filed and sanded. Not alot of progress, but I chose to spend more time watching and listening then doing work that I can do anytime. I only hope that I didnt keep them from getting done what they had hoped for the day.

A little Background Information

Welcome to my R2D2 build!
As of today, the only part I have in my possession is a 300mm Aluminum dome. I have spent the last 2 weeks getting myself added to every run of aluminum parts that I can and feel like I am off to a good start with the collecting.

In the meantime, since there is nothing build related to share, I will give a little background on how I got here.

I first stumbled on the R2 Builders club in October of 2011 when my then 5 year old son Daniel asked to be R2D2 for halloween. I have been a huge Star Wars fan all my life and have been collecting Star Wars toys and collectibles for years.  Daniel is following in my footsteps, He knows the original trilogy as well as I do, and the prequels far better. Daniel has Aspergers syndrome, which for those that dont know, is a basically a high functioning Autism. And he has the single minded focus that you would expect from someone with Aspergers or Autism. He is absolutely obsessed with Star Wars and his favorite characters are C3PO and R2D2. So anyway, after asking for an Artoo costume, my wife and I looked online and thats where we stumbled on the builders club. I looked around a bit but was intimidated and soon forgot about it. By the way, Daniel was Superman for Halloween. As much as Id have liked to give him his Artoo costume, it just didnt happen.

Forward to Jan, 2012 When I saw a picture of an R2D2 on a high school classmates facebook page. I quickly friended him and started asking him about it. His name club name is Edwardo and he was quick to answer my questions and give me some tips. Feeling a bit more confident after he answered some questions for me I joined the club and the Yahoo group. Soon after joining I started corresponding with several other members who also were quick to share advice and/or answer questions. It didnt take me long to decide I wanted to do this and after a few day spent deciding which way I wanted to go with this, have decided I want to do an all or at least mostly all aluminum droid. So here I am, I have alot of part ordered and am just waiting to get started!

My new Dome, Cant wait to get started on it!

Daniel, making sure the new dome is accurate.

Im not sure whose happier, me or him!
